Watkins Museum of History

The Watkins Museum of History, operated by the Douglas County Historical Society, shares the heritage of Lawrence, Douglas County, and the state of Kansas through a variety of exhibits, lectures, tours, and other programs. A new permanent exhibit explores the county’s free-state struggle and Civil War history, including Quantrill’s 1863 raid on Lawrence. The exhibit chronicles how the city rose from the ashes of that attack and, in more recent times, called on its early values to face the challenges of the civil rights era.
