Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums

he Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums in Fremont, Ohio, is located on the 25-acre wooded estate of 19th U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes. The site houses President Rutherford and First Lady Lucy Hayes’ 31-room Victorian mansion, a museum that was renovated in 2016, the presidential library, the president’s and first lady’s tomb and a mile of paved walking trails through the estate, called Spiegel Grove. Original White House gates are located at each entrance to the estate. The museum uses bold photos and the president’s and first lady’s own words to tell their story, from their early years to the Civil War to the White House and post White House years. It also regularly offers special exhibits. In the home, nearly all of the artifacts are original to the president, first lady and their family. On certain days of the week, themed Hayes Home tours, hands-on artifact activities, gallery talks and more are offered. Special events also are offered throughout the year. The Hayes Presidential Library & Museums is America’s first presidential library and the forerunner for the federal presidential library system. It is open year round.
