Hoyt Sherman Place

The Hoyt Sherman Place Foundation is a not-for-profit organization formed in 1994 to preserve Hoyt Sherman Place into perpetuity. Hoyt Sherman Place consists of the original home of Des Moines pioneer and civic and business leader Hoyt Sherman; Des Moines’ first public art gallery; and greater Des Moines’ only remaining historic performing arts theater.

Located at the cornerstone of Des Moines’ historic Sherman Hill neighborhood, the Hoyt Sherman Place theater and adjacent galleries have become a vibrant community-gathering place for a diverse group of performing artists and arts organizations, as well as serving corporate and individual customers’ needs for meetings, exhibits and social gatherings. The mansion welcomes visitors from around the country to tour the 1877 Victorian home with its unique architectural features, antique furnishings, and art. For over 107 years, Hoyt Sherman Place has remained open and free of charge to the public to view beautiful 19th Century art and historic artifacts.

Mission Statement:
Hoyt Sherman Place creates outstanding experiences for the cultural, historic, and educational benefit of Central Iowa, its residents and communities.
